Ruler Measurement Worksheets in Inches

Reading a ruler is a crucial skill and a great way to apply math skills to real world objects. These measuring worksheets provide practice work that will prepare first grade and second grade students for real-world ruler activities.

The initial worksheets in this section deal with reading or marking a single measurement of a specific point on an inch ruler. These worksheets are especially good practice for students who struggle reading fractional inch units following whole inch positions. Because many of the worksheets only show a partial ruler, when a student reads these problems they are required to look carefully at the ruler markings to understand the relative position to get the correct answer.

There are different sets of worksheets that deal with whole inch positions, half inch positions and fractions of inch positions. These worksheets can provide good exercises when attempting to visualize fractions, but a key ruler skill is understanding how the size of the various ruler tick marks correspond to fractions as well. You might consider using these worksheets as part of exercises that deal with combinding and reducing fractions (for example, two eighths making a quarter and similar equalities.)

Measuring Worksheets for Lengths

Another super-useful ruler skill is measuring the length of an object. Initially, this is similar to just reading a position off the ruler, but if the object isn't positioned at the start of the ruler this creates a measurement subtraction problem for the student to solve.

Because sub-inch measurements are typically expressed as fractions, these problems where the objects aren't aligned at the zero point of an inch ruler can be great fraction practice problems.
